Keeping Grain Mites Under Control.
Keeping grain mite-free is all about proper storage and a little prevention. Here’s how you can keep those tiny pests out of your grain:
1. Keep It Dry & Cool
Mites love moisture and warmth, so aim to keep your Wheat Bran below 13% moisture and store it in a cool place (below 50°F/10°C if possible). Good airflow helps too—stale, damp conditions are like a mite paradise.
2. Clean Your Storage Area First
Before you even put fresh grain in a bin, container, or bag, make sure it’s clean and dry. Leftover old grain can harbor mites, so sweep it out and sanitize if needed. If you're using containers, airtight ones are best.
3. Check Your Grain Regularly
Mites are sneaky, but you can spot them early. Look out for:
- Clumped-up grain (mites cause moisture buildup)
- A sweet, musty smell
- Tiny moving specks (yep, that’s them!)
4. Natural Prevention Hacks
- Freeze It: If you’re storing small batches, tossing them in the freezer for a few days will kill any lurking mites.
- Heat Treatment: If mites do show up, heating grain to 140°F (60°C) for an hour can wipe them out.
The key is keeping things dry, cool, and clean. Do that, and your grain should stay fresh and mite-free! Need help troubleshooting a specific issue?
