Care for Your Beetles
Container: Your bulk order of beetles can be kept in a large plastic container. It should have smooth sides. A plastic shoe box would work, it needs to be 2-3 inches above the bedding. If they have a smooth side, they don't need to be covered.
Add egg cartons to beetles for more surface area. Not toilet paper roles.
Something they can easily come and go and not be confined by others bunching in.
Bedding: Please provide a 1/2-1" layer of wheat middling, oat meal, or Your Bug Barn's worm bedding to provide bedding and a food source.
Beetles need surface area where the worms are concentrated in the bedding substrate.
Moisture:. Cant emphasis this one enough. They don't need to be watered, the moisture can come from small pieces of sliced carrots. They need the moisture so they don't eat their eggs. You can add a wet cotton ball in there.
Should you Refrigerate?: Beetles if you want the to reproduce, you'll want them in a warmer area.
To reproduce, after 2-3 weeks remove live beetles from the original container so eggs can hatch out. Please move current beetles in a separate container. This allows continual hatchings.
Some people feed dead beetles to chickens.
